5 STEPS TO BETTER COMMUNICATION

Create Better Balance • Accomplish More • Live Easier
#1. LISTEN - Fully and Intentionally
The first step to better communication is to listen.
There is a reason we have TWO ears and only ONE mouth.
Listen twice as much and as often as you speak.
#2. BE PRESENT- Don't let your mind wander
If you're not present, it's apparent in every way - with your listening, your body language, even the way you respond.
When you are fully present, you become a better communicator not only because your understanding is improved, but also because the speaker feels heard.
#3. MIRROR (REFLECT) - Summarize in your ownwords what you heard
After listening, fully and presently, make sure you "got it" it by summarizing in your own words what you heard. This way the speaker knows you're listening and you double check to make sure you understood properly.
If your summary does not correctly reflect what the speaker said, ask for further clarification.
#4. ASK QUESTIONS - Use your natural curiosity
Find out more and gain REAL clarity around the discussion.
Curiosity and wonder are the source of all learning- learn who you are talking to and learn from them.
Also questions are a sign of interest, which also makes a speaker feel great.
#5. WATCH - Look for non-verbal cues
Watching the person helps to be present and hold interest.
More importantly, watch the person for non-verbal cues - fidgeting, discomfort, excitement, large gestures, etc. - all of these cues will tell you something more about the speaker and what is being said.
Be sure not to STARE - this can be un-nerving and make for a poor communicative environment.
